Pre-resolution get skinny action plan!

Friday, November 7th, 2008

The biggest fitness time of the year is just around the corner. Soon the New Years resolutions will be flying around like feathers at a pillow fight. This is the time of the year where stepping foot into any gym at six pm is nearly impossible.

Its OK, I got an action plan to get you going before crazy fitness season begins!

In just a short time people will have high ambitions and hopes and dreams of shedding those unwanted pounds that subtly added volume to their waists in the past months (or years). Everyone will be high on willingness to workout and buzzing with beautiful body transformations on there mind.

New Years resolution time has always left me confused. Why does the New Year spark a fire underneath everyone and get them moving? I understand the whole new beginnings thing, but isn’t every Monday a new beginning?

Out of observation, an overwhelming majority of New Years resolutions live a very short life. Everyone starts strong and crashes hard. Will this be you?

So I ask… Why Wait?

Pre-2009 Plan of action:

  • Lose 1 – 2 pounds a week BEFORE new years
  • Workout an extra day a week, so if your working out 3 days a week, workout four
  • Add challenges to your workout, like run 3 miles, do a 100 squats in a row, 50 push-ups
  • Eat a vegetable with every meal
  • Replace sugary snacks with fruits

Here are few things to get you rocking before the New Years bandwagon sets ablaze.

  1. Check out Jayson Hunter’s Carb Rotation Diet – It’s simply outstanding!
  2. Check out the Special 3-Week Holiday Bootcamps
  3. If your a Snap Fitness member (or thinking about it) schedule a free personal training consult with myself, I promise I’ll get your rear in gear!

The New Year is coming, no need to wait, get going today!!

Getting Fat in a Jiffy!

I like my peanut butter!

But it wasn’t until a few days ago I realized something…

My supposedly “trans fat free” peanut butter… has trans fat!

Get this… on the front of the label it says “No Trans Fat Per Serving”

However, if you read the ingredient label you will see “Partially Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil” aka Trans Fat!

Get this junk, the FDA allows companies to label their products No Trans Fat if the Trans Fat is less then .5 grams per serving.

So as long a “serving” contains no more then .5 grams of trans fat, the food label is allowed to advertise “No Trans Fat”

So what’s the big deal?

Trans Fat is some nasty stuff. It’s being linked to increased risk of coronary heart disease. It raises your LDL Cholesterol(bad cholesterol) and lowers your HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol). In fact, the recommend amount to eat is zero grams total!

Here’s how to protect yourself.

  1. Don’t trust what is on the front of the label, read the ingredient labels
  2. If the words “Partially Hydrogenated” appear in the ingredients, it more then likely contains trans fat
  3. Eat less processed foods
  4. Shop only in the perimeter of the grocery store
  5. Include at least one vegetable and fruit in every meal

“Sexy abs in 30 days!” – The truth about diet pills

Monday, October 13th, 2008

So your desperate…

You want to shed those twenty pounds.

You have tried dieting, exercising, and even eating nothing but grapefruit for a week.

You walk down the “organic” aisle at your local grocery store and you see a bright colored bottle that says “Shed twenty pounds!” or “Get Ripped! Be Sexy!”. Heck, the pills are only thirty bucks and they are going give me a six pack, count me in!!!

Now the truth about those silly little pills.

What’s in them?

The primary ingredient in almost all of the over the counter diet pills is caffeine. Forget about all the “proprietary blend” on the ingredient label, one way or another, caffeine is the primary ingredient.

OK… caffeine is a stimulant. Stimulants accelerate the body’s metabolic processes. By speeding up the metabolic processes, the body needs to consume more energy to keep up. And yes, fat happens to be a form of energy. This is good right?

Wrong! Your body is an amazing machine, it is constantly remaining in a state of balance, called homeostasis. What happens when your body becomes over stimulated from diet pills, it has to counter act by slowing your metabolism way down… this is the caffeine “crash” everyone talks about. This crash is part of the reason why diet pills don’t work. Your body’s metabolism speeds up and then WHAM! it slows way down to recover, then a few hours later, you take more! Its like taking two steps forward and three steps back!

It costs what?

Some of these pills can cost upwards to 40 – 50 bucks a bottle and most bottles only contain around a three to four week supply! That’s about the same cost as a gym membership!!

Take it from me, save your cash… spend it on something healthy, like fruit, vegetables, or chicken breast!

How to get sexy abs

Fat loss is a systematic response to the body’s need for energy. The more energy your body requires, the more fat you body will burn!

How do you get your body to burn more energy? Sorry to state the obvious… but you need to WORKOUT!! By simply increasing your muscle mass, you can increase the amount of energy your body requires, thus you burn more fat. (Ok I realize its more complicated then what I state, but this is the simple version)

Are you done ranting yet?

So, in conclusion, save your money, save your time, diet pills are not worth the time or effort. Continue working out and focus on making progress week by week, and you too will have sexy Abs!

This grinds my gears!

The Corn Refiners Association recently have been running a national ad campaign to change the public opinion of High Fructose Corn Syrup. Look at the ingredients label on pretty much any food HFCS is in pretty much everything!!

We have become a sugar addicted society, and now according to these guys, “its ok in moderation”.

What a bunch of garbage!!

How much flippen’ pop / soda do you drink?!?

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

I’ll admit, I love my coca-cola…. and your saying “Joe, your a fitness professional, and you drink pop?? What’s up with that??”

We all have this little voice in the back of our head saying “if we only have one, its not bad”

But that little one sugar bomb adds up over time… so let’s do the math. :)

The average regular soda is about 250 calories per 20 ounces.

Let’s say you “moderate” and only drink 5 bottles a week.

So thats 5 bottles x 52 weeks = 260 bottles (or 5,200 ounces or 40.6 gallons!! ;) )

260 bottles x 250 calories each = 65,000 calories!!!!

65,000 Calories = 18.5 pounds of fat!

OUCH!!!

Ok… so let’s say you drink one soda everyday….

7 days x 250 calories x 52 weeks = 91,000 calories or 26 pounds of fat

So, before you pick up that next bottle of sugar enriched sparkling water, DO THE MATH!!!! :)
